First day in the BC: Round Top!

Kicked off this season with a fun surprise.  Sena, Sam and I's stars lined up and we decided to head to Carson Pass to check out this "banger" early season that we were missing...

We left at 4:30 am.  Kevin & Laura's U-Haul (which was empty) was stolen at around 4 am...
ah... miss this house.

Looking back at the crux... this was pretty steep here...
here's a pic of it before... let's see if you can see the rock I scraped off...
See?
Continuing down the slope...
And looking back up the other two entrances...
Here's Sena going for a double front flip... or not...
We kicked off a tiny slide.  Wind packed, nothing too scary.
Scenes from the weird formation on the lake...
Bye bye Round Top!
Back at the car, 30 min before sunset.
there was an epic sunset on the drive home.
Had a nice meal here... I can still taste the beers in the frosty mugs...

TR: Carson to Kirkwood!

2016-01-28 10 14 51
summit shot!
Had a great day out with Messy and Lou-Doo.  They were on their way to Mammoth, staying at HvF on the way down, so I caught up with them for the classic tour from Carson Pass to Kirkwood.  We met up at the Kirkwood parking lot around 7 am, and we were back at Carson touring by 8 am.  I was on a bit of a time crunch as I had to be back in the bay by 6 pm, but nevertheless we still skied Crescent Couloir, the sisters, 4th of July peak back to Kirkwood by 1:45 pm... and I made it home by 5:30 pm.  All in all, another great day in the mountains.

This time, everything went smooth... no naked ski descents, no broken necks, no mingie riding chair 3, drunken boy scout troop leaders, etc... unlike last time.  9 years ago.

We saw these boot tracks, so we decided to go up the chute rather than going around...

Since the main chute (looker's right) was a bit wind buffed and crusty, we decided to check out the middle chute.  This would be the craziest entrance to Crescent... a double with a 40 footer that drops you into the middle of the chute where you have to point it for 500 ft until you reach the apron.

First turns of the season!

... were quite dicey.

but REALLY fun.

not surprisingly other folks reported a larger skier triggered slide near by.

A few lessons learned for these early season days...

  • wear a helmet
  • wear a beacon, probably dig a pit or two.  These heavy, wind-loaded dumps are very prone to sliding...
  • be patient... as the first day will not go smooth...
  • shy away from BC booters in the beginning...
  • early bc days are tricky... it's never worth getting hurt.
