MiWok 100k

This post is more for my reflection.  Thoughts for me, for next year... or when I run longer distances.  This was the first time I ran over 50k... and I felt things my body hadn't experienced before.  Mainly pain.

The worst part was my knee.  I think I've got runner's knee?  Not sure, but my left knee has been cracking a lot for the last year.  Every time I run up the beast, it'll be "pop" "pop" "pop"... every step, fairly reliable.  Around mile 40, I got acute pain in my left knee.  The downhills were a beast... here's an article to ponder

Another discomfort was chafing.  I'm used to chafing from my randonneuring rides, but I hadn't experienced much while running.  I bandaged my chest so I was ok up top, but I didn't put any nut butter or vaseline until I got to Randall.  And when I got to Randall I told Rob I was cramping, so the lady at the Aid station got me a salted potato.... then I put my salty hands in the vaseline, and put it on my chafed area... that stung... and made my chafing worse... hiking up Randall was painful in sooo many ways.

I went out too hard in this one.  And needed to eat and drink more in the first 30k especially.  I had barely drank my tailwind and Gu.  100k is a long way, and these mistakes took a toll on me.  13 people passed me in the last 2 aid stations.

Highlights:

  • Amazing sunrise
  • seeing the headlamps dance behind me
  • perfect temps all day.
  • crossing the finish line with my boys
  • getting served pasta from Magda
  • the finish line beer.
  • Nice sunset
  • watching the last of the last racers rolling in
Lowlights:
  • Knee pain
  • Descending
  • the last section from Randall... need to do better there.
  • having a Raffi song stuck in my head the last 30 mi ("everything hurts, hurts, hurts")
Next time:
  • pack a new shirt at every aid station
  • take some aleve
  • try taping for runner's knee
  • start SLOWer
  • take a camera/phone (figure this'll help with going slow in the beginning)

3 seconds before taking this pic, I was "pee-walking" apparently a common practice from what I saw on the trails.  I wonder what the ladies do?  I was laughing to myself here.  I let Sam go around this point, and at the bottom I took a wrong turn which cost me maybe 10 min.

Pano: Tennessee Cove

Seth and his kin joined the Kuwabaras for a quick visit to get some of the oh-so-sweet winter beach time to Tennessee Cove.  There are always a few days in the winter when that high pressure ridge sits on the coast providing a windless, sunny, magical weekend to explore the green hills (that are brown 10 months of the year) or head to the beach.  Beach days in the summer can be nice, but it's usually cut short by the westerly wind that picks up around noon... good for kitesurfing... not so good for a beach day.

Anyway... I love Tennessee Cove.  The place is magic.  Tons of fun trails to explore from there too.  Amazing vistas, a nice clean beach, no cars (a quick 2 mile fire road is your way in), and bike accessible.

Weekly Pano: Rodeo Beach Hike

Another gorgeous SF winter day.  Shorts and T-shirt weather.  We went up from Rodeo Beach past Battery Townsley up toward Hill 88.  A dog friendly trail... not so stroller friendly.  For all the dog friendly areas in the headlands... check out this map.

Hawk Camp in the Headlands....

We took Kai on another camping adventure this past weekend with James, Courtney, Kalani, and Jill.  This was another short hiking trip on a fire road, so I could utilize my bike trailer again... like we did at Pt. Reyes back in Oct.

We started out at the Rodeo Ave trailhead... this exit only services this trailhead, as this was a planned start of the failed "Marincello" development project.  I'm glad those preservation efforts succeeded as we got to venture through beautifully preserved open space, instead of riding through suburbs.

Kimbo carrying Kai and a down jacket in her backpack...

Kai fell asleep during the short hike in, but as soon as we put him down, he was ready to party.

After setting up the tents, we ventured up to take in some views.  Here's Courtney overlooking Tennessee Cove.

And the city... in HDR.

Kalani working out his biceps.

After dinner, it was game time, and we mainly played Liar's Dice...

After waiting for the full moon to rise, we went to bed...

The next morning after breakfast I went on a short ride around the headlands... saw this guy in the distance.  We also heard coyotes howling at the moon at night, and Toro, who happened to be near by saw a bobcat!

And hiking out... the way out was a lot easier (especially if you had a bike)... no help required this time.

The last two ski weekends...

Stayed in town this past weekend, and went camping with the fam in the Marin Headlands.

But I had been up the last few weekends... posted on Miley's blog... and found some amazing conditions up there.  Skiing is sooo much fun...
