Date Night in Alameda

We're very fortunate.  Fortunate to have two amazing boys that make us giggle every day.  Fortunate to live in such a beautiful place where fall is the warmest time of the year.  Fortunate that we have such close friends that we can trade babysitting nights, so we can enjoy a night out by ourselves.  And fortunate to have friends that live on the water that let us stay at their place while they are out of town, chill on the deck, sit in the hot tub, and explore Alameda.

Kimbo enjoying the island life.
Kayakers out and about...
After we settled in, we decided to go on a bike/uni ride (Kimbo rode her E-bike, I rode my uni)... first stop... at Crowne Beach...
???

We rode on through the abandoned Navy base...
to our final destination... Faction Brewing...
they've got a killer view for sunset.
I'm sure 90% of folks here drive home drunk.
Kimbo was watching the Auburn game at the same time...

on our drunken ride home, we stopped at Mama Papa Lithuania for a Lithuanian feast.... I call Borscht!

back at Casa de Jeff & Julie, we grabbed a glass of wine and hopped in their hot tub after a quick night paddle to wake me up.
Next morning, we went out for a quick paddle.  Kimbo on Julie's SUP.
I'm about to have breakfast....
Checking out Jeff & Julie's e-bike.

West Point Inn!

our view from the cabin...
Of the three "major" bay area peaks (Tam, Diablo, Hamilton)... Mt. Tam is quite easily my favorite.  It's the shortest among the three at only 2572 ft... but don't tell that to the cyclists riding up it from SF.  It's not an easy climb.  Especially up Old Railroad (my preferred route).  It's arguably the birthplace of mtn biking, with pioneers such as Gary Fisher, Joe Breeze bombing down repack trail.  There was a time in my life where I'd bike up Tam before work at least once a week when I was living in the city.

So when the Schmidts came in for a visit, I had the idea of going to the West Point Inn for the night.  As the only surviving structure on the Mt Tam Scenic Railway, built in 1904.  The inn is only accessible by bike or by foot... unless you have a disabled placard, in which case you can drive there.  We also decided to hike DOWN to the inn.  So while I carried all the gear... I just coasted down hill.  Here's the xtracycle + trailer set up.  Kimbo just had Kai in a jogging stroller and the Schmidts were enjoying the hike with a camera.

Ready to rock!
Steve with the bay behind him.
Kai wasn't done jamming on his flute...
After dropping off the gear, then riding back up, then driving down to Pantoll (as you can't park overnight at the summit)... I rode back up to the inn.  And finally got to check in!
Our cabin... on stilts...
my toys
The lounge.  They encourage music, and have a guitar + other instruments to use upon request.  It's a very social atmosphere at the Inn.
The place is full of interesting memorabilia... for example, I learned that there used to be a pub, "the Tamalpais Tavern at the mountaintop!  How cool is that?  Too bad that's all gone...
The deck out front.
Hummingbirds!
They even have a bathtub upstairs if you are so inclined.
Down on the road there's even a horseshoe pit.  Kai did a great job retrieving the shoes for me.
Another great reason to stay at the inn....
Above the morning fog.
I woke up early to take advantage of the awesome trails at my doorstep.  Didn't see a single soul on my run.  Dipping in and out of the fog was a real treat.

on the Coastal Trail

And back at WP inn
Took a nice outdoor cold shower  at the cabin!  I mean c'mon how can you pass that up.

more horseshoes!
check out Kai's arranging job.
We had a fantastic breakfast... the kitchen is amazing.  Has everything you need to go all gourmet.  Plus all the spices you can dream of.

One Sunday a month in the summer, the members of WP Inn cook up a Pancake breakfast for folks to enjoy.  It's a fundraiser for the inn, and I think it'd be a terrific way to start off your Sunday.  Eat pancakes at the Inn.  Then hike down and drink beer at the Tourist Club.
After breakfast we all hiked back down to the van, which was parked at Pantoll.  Both legs of the hike were very leisurely, as you can see on the ridewithgps maps.

And finally... the timelapse.  Fog can be quite beautiful...

Kayaking across the bay.

Durbs and I crossed the bay en route to Dres & Ann's baby shower. A beautiful day, a really fun paddle... picked up some Pliny, donuts, and a bagel at the Ferry building. Durbo then got on a scooter to bart to get back home.

Tuolumne Craggin (aka. Hangdoggin)

The day after climbing North Peak in Tuolumne. It's been about 3 mo. since I've climbed anything... and hopping on a 10c, then a 10d was tough.

Timelapse: Tahoe Storm

Caught a nice sunset from our neighborhood on Fri night after skiing a surprisingly good day at Squaw with Moses & B-ral.  Too bad the battery ran out in the middle... alas.  Watch in HD, if you can...

B&B Ski Trip Report coming next!

Here's a little preview of the trip... (if your computer can handle it, put it on HD on full screen) http://vimeo.com/19650665

I've still got quite a bit of sorting to do... and had quite a scare as my computer crashed while transferring the data to my hard drive.  After 30 seconds of google-ing... I found PhotoRec and I believe I got all my pictures back... just not sorted or dated.  But I was very, very happy that the pics were recovered (and hopefully you'll be too when I share them)!

The Miley Bros and I spent three nights in the Tahoe backcountry this past weekend.  We found pow, corn, cliffs, rum, snomo-lers, rum, whiskey (duh...), cheese cake, a 3 gallon keg of amazing homebrew, met a bunch of new friends, and had an amazing journey.

I'm sure Miley (and I) will post on his blog soon... check it out (add it to your reader).  www.tahoepulp.wordpress.com

Shasta blows!

HARD...

I decided to head up Shasta on Sat.  So late Saturday night, I packed up, and started driving.  Took a nap at around 4 am at a rest stop, and got to the trailhead around 7 am... calm... but plenty of cloud cover.  At that point I didn't think I would make it.  But after this much investment, I've gotta go test the waters.  Made it to the top of the red banks... just shy of 13,000 ft?  And the winds were insane.  When I got an ice shard stuck in my lower lip, I decided to turn around.  Basically skated down the mountain spitting blood every few turns.  Made it back down in 30 min... took another lap on the lower section (where the snow was softer), and at the top my boot broke... (now in permanent walk mode...) Ayyyeeee... 'twas not to be...

Anyway, here are two time-lapse shots from my trip...

Shed Building!

So our new home doesn't have a garage or a shed.  :(

But as a compromise, and so that we can actually use our second bedroom, we hired Diego Soto to put in a shed on our long driveway.

Watch!

For those of you in the bay area... if you need any renovations, or shed, or garages installed... I can refer you to Diego.  He da man!

Sunsets from the E. Bay...

Go right through the GG Bridge in the winter from Berkeley.  You just have to move along with the sun's ever changing azimuth angle.  This sunset was from the Berkeley Pier yesterday, as in the day the Giants won the WS!

Here's a page I made a few years back dedicated to this beautiful sight.

And a map, some guy made.

Tutorial: How to take a Time-Lapse on your Canon

This is for the folks that have asked me how I make my Time-Lapse vids.

I'll dedicate this one to the one and only Messy, since his time-lapse (of the dragonfly... or is it a mayfly... below) was what really inspired me to try it.

Anyway, I almost got a Nikon because the canon doesn't have this mode... or so I thought.  Then I found CHDK.  It's a hack for your Canon to add a few more features to your camera, including the "ultra-intravalometer" a script that allows you to make these cool time-lapse.

So here's the steps:
  1. If you have a canon camera, make sure there is a CHDK is supported for your model.  Go to http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CHDK and look for your model under "Supported Models" on the right hand column.
  2. Make sure you have a SD card that is 4 Gb or smaller.
  3. Download CardTricks
  4. Open the application and select the CARD's LETTER by clicking on the picture of a SD card.
  5. Click the Format as FAT button, read and accepted the notice.
  6. Click the Make Bootable button, read and accepted the notice.
  7. click the Download CHDK button and pick your camera model ZIP file.
  8. Click the CHDK Card button and point to the ZIP file you downloaded.
  9. Then go to: http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/UBASIC/Scripts:_Ultra_Intervalometer, and open your notepad, and make a bas file (EDIT: See comment below... much better script)
  10. Open explorer, and put the bas file into the folder "scripts" under "CHDK"
  11. Protect the card (by moving the tab on the side).  Place the card in your camera.
  12. Press the printer button to load your script (you'll have to play around here... but I usually have it set to take a pic every 1-5 seconds or so... depends what you are taking a pic of... set it to take infinite pics)
  13. Lower the resolution (you won't need the highest resolution for these vids anyway, but it also quickens the processing time on your camera... I put it on M2, which is 4 MP and 2272 x 1704... and FULL HD = 1920×1080)
  14. Turn flash off
  15. Turn display off (if you can)
  16. Put it on Manual Focus (I set it on Infinity)
  17. Adjust the exposure (often on sunsets, I'll put it at -1 or so)
  18. Use a tripod, and UR good to go.
Once you have the pics, most folks use QuickTime Pro to merge the footage.  Just put the images in one folder, "open Image Sequence", export at 30 fps, high res, etc, and you are good to go.

Also, check out http://forum.timescapes.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=1871 if you really get into it.
