Santa Cruz Bike Tour #kidfreetandemtour

We've been doing some weekend kid swaps with the Metreses and Dufrours for the last few years.  This year we decided to hop on our tandem for a short tour in the S. Bay.  We like to do things that we don't really get to do while toting around our kids... like kayaking, or bike touring.  Last year we did both.  What a great idea.  Here's our route...

We stopped in the S. Bay to say hello to Emi and her mama..
We parked off of Skyline Blvd and Hwy 17 and soon made our short (but hilly) ride to Castle Rock SP for our first night.  We went to the Castle Rock Trail Camp, which is first come first serve.  The camp is 2.8 miles from The parking lot, or if you are on your bike, you can bike in on a dirt service road for a mile.
The turn off is at the rod & gun club... that's the back of the sign...

There's a little shelter there in case it starts raining...

our plan was to go light.  So we planned on buying our dinners and leaving before breakfast.  Mmmm burrito...
tons of poison oak...
went on a short hike to a lookout.  It was well worth it.
Day 2.  We got up, packed up, and rolled into Boulder Creek for breakfast.

I got the "lumberjack"

After that big breakfast, we went up Jamison Creek Rd.... the steepest section of road on our trip.  Kimbo got off and walked.

here she comes...
after bombing down Empire Grade, we hopped on Hwy 1 for a short bit.
Then hopped on the bike lane past Wilder Ranch to Natural Bridges State Beach.

Got ourselves some free Ice Cream from these amazing kids.
and watched surfers catch waves.

Then cruised over to Food Lounge and got some fried chicken, played cornhole, and listened to a bunch of older ladies gossip.  Beers were meh...
what is this?
Cruising down the bike path towards Capitola.
and stopped at East Cliff Brew Co on the way...

Made it to camp and caught some of the Copa America.
Here's the biker hiker site at New Brighton.  It feels like an after thought.... which it probably was.  The site is pretty small and is in the middle of a parking lot.  Nothing like Half Moon Bay's... that's a 5 star one... I'd give this 2.  Note the kid in a hammock behind....
The beach at New Brighton is pretty awesome.  And no one seems to care about the rules.  You should be able to see a few dogs off leash, a fire, folks freely drinking beer, out of glass bottles in this one pic.  We just need a big teepee set up, and then we would've thought someone was doing this out of spite.
After a quick dip in the ocean and setting up camp, we biked back into town for dinner.  Walked around to check out what Capitola has to offer.
This floating pontoon looked amazing...
very chill
Then we found an AC DC cover band to check out.  The bachelorette party made this quite an entertaining night.
The next morning, we got up, packed up, and went hunting for breakfast.  We need fuel for our climb today.
Satisfecho.
We cruised up Soquel Rd and got a flat at the top...
Turned out to be the rim tape... so we walked a bit...
To a winery.
And got my tire fixed.  Then it went flat a few miles later.  Then I just walked to the car (0.5 miles).
And drove straight to the Dufours to pick up our kiddos.

Then over to Toro's for a BBQ/Warriors NBA Final...

No one cares who won Funk!  Sheesh...
